Owning a Home Business is Like Having 5 Star Employment Insurance
It’s everyone’s retirement dream, to have more time to do
what you love, and enjoy your family free from the 9 -5 and
working only a few hours a week.
If we don’t win the lottery (fat chance) or inherit a fortune
(more likely) we would need the security of steady income
from a pension or investments, or a few thousand of dollars
of residual income flowing through our bank account each
month. Nice thought.
I was speaking to my good friend Larry last week. He has
worked really hard in a construction company all his adult
life. He has done well for his family and contributed a lot
to his community. His beautiful house sits on a sizable
parcel of land; there are horses in the paddock and big dogs
that chase your car up the mile long driveway whenever you
visit. For most of us he lives the idyllic life we strive for.
Then he got sick. He was telling me and he couldn’t manage
the 60 hours work a week that it took to buy and maintain his
lifestyle. In a few short months my proud hard working friend
has been reduced to accepting handouts from folk he hardly
knows. I must say everyone seems happy to help, but his pride
has been dented and that’s tough for an independent man to
live with.
So what went wrong? There was nothing amiss about Larry’s
work ethic or his business acumen. The mistake he made was
believing he was infallible and that hard work makes you
rich. His thinking was too narrow and short term. What he has
learnt the hard way, is that being too busy to plan for the
future has cost him dear.
What Larry really needed was a fall back plan, an asset or
business to bring him a second pay-check or residual income
to bring him regular money that he didn’t need to work so
hard for.
I have heard it said that the average American is only two
weeks away from the street. I guess that means that way too
many people live from pay check to pay check and do not have
the safety net of a second business to catch them if they
fall. It is worth considering if you are one of the people in
danger of falling into the ‘Larry Trap’.
I want to end todays comments by offering you information
that will get you thinking, give you ideas for protecting
your salary and put this whole concept of residual income in
